The beginning of our journey (Saturday)

Standard

Our airport arrival time was 5:30AM, and shortly before 5:00 AM missionaries (old and new) began arriving at the airport. Looking tired, but determined, we congregated near the windows until we were instructed to check in with our action packer. Marco instructed us and guided us through this time consuming process, but luckily in the meantime, the long security check-in line had dwindled to almost no one. Most of us went quickly through the line except for Ralph who had packed a mysterious stapler. After a prayer and breakfast, we gathered at the departure gate. Laughter, picture taking, and silliness helped passed the time. We all posed for a group picture. By the time we got on the plane, we were all ready to have our mission journey officially begin. Many carry-on bags had to be squished into the overhead bins, but our flight was uneventful. Leaving the airport in Guatemala City, we experienced the flavor of a busy metropolis with many two story American fast food places, traffic jams, and some outdoor markets. Rain, rain, rain. On the bus we practiced our songs as we traveled through the mountainous countryside. Farming along the roadside was varied with some fields cascading down the hillside. The road was one with very sharp curves which were accompanied by some crazy sounds by some of the more creative missionaries. At one point Marco pointed out that there was a volcano, but the visibility was such that is was not visible. Arriving at the hotel, we made assembly lines passing action packers, and waters through many hands to get everything to the right place – only to have to move it again. After a delicious evening meal, Luis led us in prayer with the Liturgy of the Hours. After our prayers, the real fun began which was unpacking the action packers, so they were ready for our week. Hunting for Bibles was like an Easter egg hunt because they were hidden in many boxes because of their weight. I will try to catch up tomorrow now that we have the internet up and running here at the hotel. Notes from Ann

  1. Not sure if my last post went through. I laughed when I read the post about passing action packers and water into the hotel…what memories! Miss you all. I am praying daily for you. Eileen Campbell

  2. Hi, Team! You all look absolutely joyous and glowing! I’ve been over to the Mary Chapel several times this week – usually there are 4 to 6 people praying at all times. You are definitely covered in loving prayer. I agree with Eileen, the passing of the action packers story made me smile, too! Can’t wait to hear your other stories. God bless you and get some sleep! Love and Prayers, Susana Gallagher
